Last month at the Tokyo Game Show, our own Jacob Bukacek got a chance to get some hands-on time with a demo for Sonic Frontiers and walked away with mixed emotions. After defeating large-scale bosses, Sonic will acquire pieces to portals that allow him to enter Cyber Space, which host familiar Sonic levels that contain optional challenges and play out from both the side-scrolling and behind-the-back perspectives. Along his journey, Sonic will encounter new kinds of robotic enemies that will force him to expand his prowess in combat, as players can now dodge and parry while fighting foes and use the Cyloop to weaken them.

In addition to platforming challenges placed throughout the islands that feature familiar gadgets like springs and boost pads, the Starfall Islands are littered with collectibles including Kocos that upgrade Sonic’s abilities and Memory Tokens that will help Sonic track down his allies. In addition to Sonic’s familiar abilities such as homing dashes, grinding on rails and running on walls, the blue blur can now also perform the Cyloop, allowing players to outline different shapes with Sonic’s movements to grant him faster speeds or create a circle of light to interact with objects. Sonic lands in the Starfall Islands, a vast open zone populated with different biomes and dangerous threats as Sonic looks to collect the Chaos Emeralds and find his friends. How would the gameplay and open space take advantage of Sonic’s blistering speeds? Would there be a wide enough variety of things to do in the open world that don’t solely involve Sonic’s ability to rapidly reach the finish line? The past year of new trailers and gameplay have undeniably been a bumpy road for Sonic Frontiers, but with launch approaching in just under a month, we now have a better sense of what players can expect when Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are sucked through a mysterious wormhole and separated from one another.
